Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is a biohazard?

There are a wide range of potential sources of biohazard. Whilst some are well known, there are many which people may not immediately consider as a biohazard, including biological matter, plants, animals and their byproducts. These include Blood, Urine, Faeces, Saliva, Vomit, Mucus and more.

If any human bodily fluids are present at a scene, please call us to discuss our specialist biohazard cleaning services.

There is a real risk of infection from biological hazards, human and animal waste. We don’t take risks when managing such things, neither should you.

  • How much does crime scene cleaning cost?

Although this is such a generic term, it really depends on the situation. There are many factors which affect the cost of crime scene cleaning.

These can include: the type of biohazard resulting from the crime scene. The amount of contamination. The length of time it will take to clean up. The amount of staff required to clean up a crime scene, clean up after a death or indeed all extreme and specialist cleaning.

In general it is more expensive than standard domestic cleaning. Considering the time, knowledge, equipment and risk involved, this is to be expected and true of all specialist cleaning.

We do not charge by the hour. We charge by the completion of the task. This ensures a shift in focus from time to task in-hand.

Give our team a call to discuss the circumstances and we will be very happy to help.

  • Why is professional trauma cleaning and crime scene cleaning essential?

Trauma and crime scenes, unexpected deaths and suicides present a serious biohazard risk. Bloodborne pathogens can be present without anyones knowledge and must be treated with the upmost of care and attention. Cleaning up after a traumatic event is traumatic in itself and nobody should have to go through that process. It can be extremely time consuming and unpleasant - which is why we are here to help when needed.

Our extensive training, qualifications, experience and insurances provide us with the ability to provide professional standards to the highest degree.

  • Is there a specialist cleaning company near me?

Empire Environmental cover a wide area across the south and central regions of England. These include Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Wiltshire, Warwickshire, Gloucester and all surrounding areas such as Herefordshire, Hertfordshire, Hampshire and further afield as needed. For biohazard emergency response we aim to be with you within 2 hours of our contact, however our average attendance is aimed at 90 minutes. If you are unsure if there is a specialist cleaning service near you, we may just be able to help, and quicker than you expected. Give our team a call to discuss or fill out our contact form.

From our primary base in Oxfordshire we are able to provide services to the south coast, through to the West Midlands and Northamptonshire.

  • What does a specialist cleaning company do that differs to a 'standard' company?

Our work contains risk and in general takes longer and requires more attention to detail than regular cleaning services. Almost all of our work requires the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE), specialist equipment, cleaning solutions and tools.

Where a domestic cleaning company will maintain a standard of cleaning which already exists, we work to a standard where a property hasn’t been cleaned for many many years, hoarded properties, gross-filth and extreme cleaning and locations where risks such as biohazards (blood cleanup, after death cleaning etc) are present and require a specialist approach to their management and their cleaning.

  • What is extreme cleaning?

Imagine a property that has not been cleaned for 4 years, where the occupants have had to start using the bath as a toilet because the toilet itself is blocked full of faeces. Now include a great deal of clutter, animal waste, rotting food and an awful smell. This is to an extreme where our services help.

We also provide a 24 hour emergency response to biohazards, including the aftermath of a sudden death at home, or biohazards within a public place (for example a nightclub or pub), to suicides and issues of biological risk.

In short, extreme cleaning is where PPE and RPE is needed, where something is outside the remit of domestic cleaning services and requires specialist cleaning.

Our work also includes hazardous cleaning of difference natures, which include mould cleaning and remediation, removal and cleaning of Lead Dust (Lead Contaminated Dust - LCD) and other hazardous substances.

  • Who cleans up after someone has died?

You may need the help of a specialist company to help clean premises after a loved one has died.

Sometimes a bed, sofa or flooring have been affected by bodily fluids. Very often these are disposed of but can also be cleaned (depending on the circumstances and amount of affected area). If large areas of carpet are affected, or the bodily fluid has been on it for some time, it may not be viable to clean - but our team can provide advice and guidance on this and provide full remediation. Predominantly this depends on your wishes and the practicality. Sometimes the circumstances of the sudden death mean that an entire room or rooms are affected and require attention. Some deaths involve violence or an accident and the area can be wider spread than a single room.

Some times people die at home and are undiscovered for days, weeks or months. This is often referred to as an unattended death. It is not uncommon for such a home to be in a state of disorder and poor cleanliness.

You should never feel embarrassed by such events and our team are here to help, with the aim of returning the property to how it was before this traumatic event.

  • Do you provide estimations over the phone or via email?

We always aim to visit ahead of providing an estimation?

The majority of our work involves risk - be that to you or to us. It is essential that no matter the extreme of the work required, we aim to visit ahead of providing an estimate to ensure that we capture all of the work involved, and plan to manage the risk.

We can on occasion work from photographs, if appropriate, but it is far better to attend in person. We can gain a greater understanding of the work involved, equipment required, time needed to complete your clean and therefore provide a much more accurate estimation. Importantly, this is about risk management which not something that anybody should take lightly.

Our visits are with no obligation and will give you an opportunity to meet with us to discuss how we could help you.

  • Can I clean up a biohazard or a hazardous substance myself?

If you wish to, absolutely. However we would strongly advise against this and tend to find that the majority of people just don’t want to.

Our team have undertaken a great deal of training in the methodology of handling and cleaning hazards. We understand the risks involved and not least, we understand how traumatic this can be - nobody should have to clean up a loved ones bodily fluid or something that will put them at risk either physically or mentally.

We always recommend getting in touch with us to discuss your needs, arrange a visit and provide you with the best route to eliminating the risk and cleaning the aftermath. This is what we do, and why we do it.

If we aren’t prepared to take risks, neither should you be. Our visits are with no obligation and will give you an opportunity to meet with us to discuss how we could help you.
